Shots fired on popular walkway Hearing shotguns echoing in the air, and coming across dying piglets on the track, wasn’t what one Richmond man expected when he was walking his dogs last week. The man -- who didn’t want to be named -- believes walkways in the Dellside Reserve, up Kingsland Forest, are attracting hunting and poaching, and he hopes it will end before someone is hurt. He says he saw a man walking with a rifle and hunting dogs, three weeks after seeing another person in a ute with open dog boxes on the back. He also saw three “half eaten” piglets. He had reported all incidents to Tasman District Council. “They were half eaten, it was a bloody ugly sight but they were still on the track, just off where you walk. If I was a young girl and saw that I’d probably throw up,” he says. “It’s obvious that pig hunting is going on, they must’ve got the

mother and the piglets didn’t survive the attack.” The last incident was when he spotted a hunter with a rifle in a sleeve slung over his shoulder and heard gunshots shortly after. “It was about 9.39am, I heard ‘kaboom!’, you could hear it right up the valley. It was definitely a shot gun. It’s only 200 yards from the houses on a reserve where there are heaps of people.” Tasman District Council’s reserves officer Stephen Richards says while permits can be granted for hunting, the Kingsland Forest area was not one of them, and this case was “very unusual”. “It’s a unique situation and I’d very much like to chat with the person who is involved. We take this very serious, it’s not some

Hope contractor wins young achiever award Hope’s Ollie Biggs, who won the Humes Young Achiever Award at the Nelson Marlborough Contractors Federation annual awards held at the Rutherford Hotel in Nelson on Saturday night, says the award is a reflection of his employer’s commitment to staff training programmes. Last year, Higgins Contracting Nelson won the Supreme Award for its work on the Waikawa Marina near Picton and this year it made it two in a row winning the award for completing a $2.15 million contract at the Picton Marina. Higgins Nelson manager Andrew Murphy says the contract involved redeveloping the marina basin, constructing a sea wall and boat ramp and laying 11,000 square metres of asphalt as well as altering the marina’s histori-
cally significant memorial gates. Andrew says Higgins had up to 35 people on site at the height of the project which was completed by the end of November. The contract is also a finalist for next month’s national awards. Tasman Civil won the H & S Professionals Health and Safety Award, Ching Contracting and Donaldson Civil were joint-winners of the Crombie Lockwood Award for projects valued under $200,000, Fulton Hogan won the Cable Price Award for projects valued between $200,000 and $750,000 and Downer NZ won the Land Dimensions Limited Award for projects valued from $750,000 to $1.5 million. Higgins had earlier won the Hynds Award for projects valued over $1.5 million.

It’s used so
heavily for recreation, there’s no room for people with firearms.” Police say there are a number of offences to cover any situation involving people carrying guns unlawfully, including up to three months in prison for possessing a firearm without a licence. Both Stephen and Nelson Police say they would encourage members of the public to report any incidents which could involve someone with a firearm in that area.

It’s been an exciting few days at the Commonwealth Games for Nelson’s top sporting stars – and equally so for their families. On Monday morning, lawn bowler Jo Edwards won Nelson’s first gold medal of the games with a thrilling win over the defending Commonwealth Games champion from England. Watching on was her “immensely proud” coach and husband, Dave Edwards. Jo later said she’d worked harder before these games than any other. “It’s a very, very proud moment. A hell of a lot of hard work has gone into this campaign. I’ve probably worked harder than for any other,” she told the New Zealand Herald. Another thrilled Nelsonian was Tim Brenton as he watched his daughter Amy Mcilroy win bronze in the women’s fours, alongside fellow Nelsonian Val Smith. Tim and his wife Raewyn were in the stands cheering and he told Waimea Weekly it was a great moment. “A dream come

‘Smart’ power meters coming to town New smart power meters, which will be installed in up to 40,000 properties around Nelson and Tasman over the next two years at a cost of $15-20 million, will reduce power outages and not result in an increase in electricity charges. Network Tasman, which owns and operates the electricity distribution network in the Nelson-Tasman region, excluding Nelson City, will be spending $15-20 million to replace existing power meters with the new smart meters starting in September. Advanced metering development manager Andrew Stanton says the smart meters will automatically relay electricity useage to
power companies via radio signal and can provide consumers with important information about their power consumption. Andrew says smart meters will also mean customers will not be required to provide keys to access houses to read internal meters, while power accounts will be based upon actual consumption, not estimates. In the future, customers may also be able to set alarms to alert them if their power usage is too high and set energy-efficient appliances to interact with the advanced meters to manage electricity costs. However, Andrew says the big advantage will be that Network Tasman will receive

quickly repair, or even pre-empt, faults. The meters will also automatically cutout when there is a power overload, reducing the average power outage time due to blown fuses from 99 minutes to two minutes. “We will know immediately when there is an outage rather than relying on a customer to phone us with a problem. We’ll also be able to identify abnormal voltages that may be a precursor to a failure and fix the faults before they happen.” Andrew says they haven’t yet finalised the programme for the rollout of the new meters although property owners will be notified before the meters are installed.
Volunteers plant 3000 trees in Appleby It may have been a chilly Sunday morning at the Appleby Reserve but that didn’t stop a dedicated group of volunteers who planted thousands of trees. The Tasman District Council group Keep Richmond Beautiful and the Aucklandbased trust, Sustainable Coastlines, along with some enthusiastic locals, all got stuck in, planting up to 3000 trees around the Waimea River park area. Sustainable Coastlines Sam Judd said their involvement in the plant was part of a nationwide road show called “Love Your Water” that has been running training workshops, educational talks and riparian tree planting events in every region of New Zealand. “Out of 16 regions that we’ve been working in this winter, Tasman has actually been one of the standouts. It’s been made really easy; people have been really enthusiastic. Lots of people showed up to the workshops from lots of different groups,” says Sam.

NEWS in brief POLICE FRUSTRATED BY CAR THEFTS: More than 350 cars have been broken into this year, almost half of which were unlocked. Police say they’ve been pushing the message for Nelsonians to lock their cars over the past few years, but it hasn’t had much of an impact. For the six months from January 1 to June 30, 367 offences have been reported to police involving the theft of property from motor vehicles. Of these, 44 per cent, or 161 offences, have involved thefts from vehicles that were unlocked or insecure. Breakfast Club gets young swimmers off the blocks

It’s not a lot of fun getting out of bed early in the morning especially in winter but a dedicated group of parents and grandparents are happily doing it three times a week just to make life easier for some of the Tasman district’s up-andcoming swim stars. The Tasman Swim Club coach Andy Adair was concerned that members of the club’s age group squad were struggling to get ready for school in time after their morning training sessions. The squad trains five mornings a week for two hours, starting at 5.15, leaving swimmers only about 40 minutes to eat breakfast and get to school. Andy suggested they could start a breakfast club to provide a poolside breakfast for the swimmers, and a group of parents and grandparents are taking up the challenge. The breakfast club was formed about a year ago and parent Lisa Dunn says it is proving extremely popular with the swimmers and their families. “We have swimmers coming in from the Moutere and Mapua and it’s been a lifesaver for them,” Lisa says. “It’s also really convenient for the swimmers who live in Richmond and Nelson, because it means

When Margaret Green, a volunteer of 70 years, received a letter from council last week, she thought she might have been in trouble. “You immediately think there’s something wrong when you get a letter from the council,” she says. “I thought ‘oh my gosh, I’ve paid my rates’.” But her concern turned into joy when she opened the letter and found out she was one of ten people that would receive a Tasman District Council Community Award, recognising the work she has done with the community. “I was just totally blown away.” The Richmond volunteer, who turns 80 next month, has been helping people since she was just a child living on an apple orchard in Ruby Bay. “It was a small community but everyone helped each other. All the men were away at war so it was just second nature to help each other.” Her first tasks as a volunteer included visiting the elderly to give them company, setting up a youth group, mowing lawns and doing gardening for peo-

She married a minister and it was all “full on” from there. “I set up a youth group, after school kids programmes, visiting people, and just supporting people.” Margaret’s most recent volunteer work has included mentoring Pacific Island students, cooking meals and making sure people have bedding. She has helped out with Red Cross and the meals on wheels programme, and gardening for disabled people. The Community Award was the first time she had been formally recognised, but she says
the work she does is for love. She says it keeps her busy in retirement, and she doesn’t plan to stop serving the community. “No plans to stop at all. No way. I’d rather fall off a ladder gardening or slip down a bank rescuing someone and die that way than to sitting as a blob, I just couldn’t stand that.” The other nine recipients were; Gordon Currie, Gertrude Mary Keddie, Warren Owen Webby, Roy Reid, Colin Gibbs, Peter Webster, Mary Garner, Paul Wilkins and Eileen Stewart. They received a framed certificate at Tasman District Council on Friday.

Local charity pumps water in African town People in the African town of Torwood will no longer have to walk for hours just to get clean water at the crack of dawn – and it’s all thanks to the support of a Nelson charity and its donors. A small team of volunteers from Water for Prosperity – who organize the annual Walk for Water event at Rabbit Island each year – returned to Torwood in June to install a further eight ground water-bores. Six of those were funded by the Emirates Airline Foundation and two were funded thanks to the generosity of Nelson sponsors and donors. Last year, volunteers from Water for Prosperity visited the town and installed three ground water-bores, two in schools and one on council land. But to reduce long queues at those bores, and to increase accessibility, Gideon Matorino and his wife Sibusisiwe Matorino, David Barnes, Philip Catchpole and Paul Sinclair returned last month, focusing on new water-bores spread across the town, and near

and adults. We’ve made a real impact into the community and you could feel the appreciation from the community.” Water for Prosperity is planning to return to Torwood in 2015 to install more water-bores, and to construct basic showers and toilet facilities in a residential area which houses 1000 people. “At the moment they’re travelling two kilometres to the nearby bush, and it’s a real mission.”

The Conservation Minister has confirmed that the largest drop ever of 1080 is getting underway over 1,000,000

He makes no reference to the killing of many species, invertebrates, birds, including natives and innocent mammals all of which die a death that any self respecting country would not permit. This method has been used for at least 50 years in New Zealand. It has failed and will continue to fail until a growing global horror is brought to bear on such indefensible killing across this country. It is a chilling fact that New Zealand uses over 90 per cent of the annual world production of 1080. Guess who owns the manufacturing capacity for this obscenity? “Clean Green”-- Yeah Right! Students take on West Side Story Waimea College students have been busy since the beginning of the year preparing for their take on West Side Story. And now it’s show time, with the final touches put on the stage, costumes, lights and dialogue all completed. West Side Story is set in New York in the 1950s and is based around two rival gangs – the Sharks and the Jets – and a love story which divides them. “It’s very loosely based on the story of Romeo and Juliet and about overcoming the struggles between the two gangs,” says director Melanie Stewart. Melanie says West Side Story had all of the aspects they needed for another successful production. “It’s a musical with singing,
acting and dancing, it has a nice big cast, it was challenging with challenging music.” The cast includes 57 students, while there are another 30 in the orchestra and 25 backstage. The orchestra began work on the music even before school started this year, and the cast has been rehearsing since February. Melanie says it’s coming together really well. “We’re really excited about it and these guys just work so hard. We’ve had kids in during the holidays painting and cutting out stars, it’s been amazing.” West Side Story begins tonight and runs for four nights. Corkill heads to hospital

A week after a hugely successful quiz night, Mike Corkill was admitted to Nelson Hospital and will remain there for a week. The Nelson father of six is trying to raise $100,000 for life-saving surgery to replace his lungs. Mike was born with a condition that makes his lungs work harder than normal. He will die if he doesn’t receive the transplant. Last Friday, just under $5000 was raised from a quiz night, bringing his total to $30,000. But time is running out. Mike is likely to be on oxygen full time when he is released from hospital. He says doctors told him he was close to heart failure and he had an extra 20 kilograms of fluid in him. “I’m feeling a lot better than on Friday. Every time I coughed I was almost passing out. But I’m still positive.” He also wanted to thank everyone who turned up to is quiz night and those who donated. He made a special mention of the team at Waimea Weekly for their efforts on the night. The 2014 New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards are the most prestigious local awards the industry has and recognises the best in the hospitality business. This year, hundreds of businesses and workers were nominated by people from Golden Bay to Murchison to Rai Valley, and everywhere in between. There was an overwhelming response so the finalists were narrowed down to the top in each category, based on the number of nominated votes. The awards are split into two categories – industry awards, which are judged by experts, and the people’s choice awards, voted and judged by you. So it’s important you have your say! Simply fill in who you want to win, cut out the form and drop it off to either newspaper office in Selwyn Pl, Nelson or Salisbury Rd, Richmond. Or send
it to Nelson Hospitality Awards, PO Box 503 Wellington. Voting will close at 12 noon on Friday 8 August, so get your entry form in before then. The winners will be announced at the biannual New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards event to be held on Monday 25 August, venue to be confirmed. Tickets will be on sale at Hardys Bar. The ticket price will be $65, which includes drinks served and a three course dinner.
You can vote in as many categories as you wish, only one vote per category. Voting closes Friday 8 August at 12 noon. Voting forms must be clipped from the paper, no photocopies accepted. Menzshed puts its hand up for $10,000
A charity that gives blokes a “new lease on life” and an opportunity to use their skills to help the community, is one of the latest entries in the Car Company Charity Drive competition. Menzshed Waimea opened almost three years ago and now has over 200 members who spend time at its headquarters at the A and P Showgrounds at Richmond Park. It is one of the hundreds of Menzsheds around New Zealand and Australia, where the charity started, and Waimea coordinator Alan Kissell says for many of the members it has been a saviour. Alan says their members are typically retired tradesmen who have sold their homes and “downsized their sheds”, but still have a lot to contribute to the community. When they join the Menzshed, they become involved in building things for community projects and teaching young men new skills, as well as getting the chance to enjoy some male bonding. “We get a lot of men who have

been sitting around in their retirement homes with nothing to do,” Alan says. “When they come here they get a new lease on life - they all have something to offer the community.” Clarrie Merrick, 89, says he moved to Nelson when his wife died, and joined the Menzshed to remain active and meet new friends. The retired engineer and farmer says the Menzshed gives him an opportunity to work on projects that help out the community and allows him to pass on his knowledge to the younger generation. “It keeps me alive and I get the chance to argue with people,” Clarrie says. Alan says Menzshed Waimea is not just about looking after old blokes - it also helps out intellectually-disabled men from around the district and one or two younger blokes as well. “Every Tuesday morning we get about 20 blokes from IDEA
services and we have members who help them with various projects. They have a great time here,” Alan says. Member Noel Riley says finding the funding to keep the Menzshed operating is a constant battle and if they won the Car Company Charity Drive it would allow them to “do so many more projects” for the community. It costs about $10,000 a year to run their Menzshed, which they get from subscriptions and grants. “We are building a new engineering shed at the moment so we can teach young kids how to weld and some light engineering skills. We always need funding for things like that,” Noel says. The Car Company Charity Drive competition started last year and offers $10,000 to a non-profit group or organisation in the Nelson-Tasman region. Groups can enter the competition until August 22 by going to the Car Company’s website carcompanynelson. co.nz or picking up an entry form from any of its car yards.

Rugby club to host boar hunt
Entries for next month’s Tapawera Rugby Club Open Boar Hunt are now open, and organisers are expecting another great event. The boar hunt is a major fundraiser for the rugby club and has been running for three years. Event coordinator Karen Jones says most of the members of the rugby club are keen hunters, but it’s open to anyone in the public. They usually get entries from as far as Golden Bay. The boar hunt begins at 5pm on August 7 and runs until the weigh in at 4pm on August 9. Entry is $20 per person and there are cash prizes for the top five heaviest boars – including $250 for the heaviest boar, $50 for biggest tusks and $500 for the average weight. The Appleby Volunteer Rural Fire Force has received a huge amount of support from the public in their recent fundraising drive and would like to express how grateful they are to everyone who contributed. Envelopes were delivered around the Appleby community and the response was fantastic, as people supported the local rural fire force by donating much-needed funds. Rural delivery contractor John Cumpstone, delivered the envelopes for free and both Smartprint and Richmond Office Products supported the cause by printing and supplying the envelopes. It was a great joint effort and there are too many people to thank individually, but every bit was greatly appreciated. The fundraising efforts have allowed Appleby Volunteer Rural Fire Force to upgrade their aging radios and continue to serve the community efficiently. Waimea West Horticulture also deserves a big thank you for their generous $3500 donation to the rural fire force. “They are a community activity in the area where we operate, we think they do a fantastic job and we are keen to support them in anything that can make them more efficient,” says Wai-West Horticulture’s Nick Patterson. Being one of the founding members when the rural fire brigade started 25 years ago, Nick understands how difficult it can be to find funds, but says their focus has always been the service the rural fire force provides to the local community.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Trael Joass can’t feel his heart beating. Severe cramp fills his chest. He undoes his headgear and drops to the ground. He tries to breathe slowly. He rubs a pulse on his neck, a way to soothe the pain. He feels helpless. Then, “tick”, it’s over. He gets back up and plays the rest of the rugby game like it had never happened. The 21 year old Wanderers second-five has had the same heart problem for the past three years, and up until two weeks ago it was manageable, and he could still bust through tackles, smash opposition attackers and run with speed, even after experiencing another “episode”. But before the club rugby final against Waimea Old Boys, Trael’s cardiologist told him five words he never wanted to hear. “No more sport for you.” “I said ‘you’ve got to be kidding me, right?’ I just broke down when I heard that,” Trael explains. “I just cried for ages. It’s hard enough to be told I’m not going to be able

Photos: Phillip Rollo. to trial for the Makos because this is the closest I’ve ever gotten, but then it’s another thing not being able to play for my club team in a final. That was the most upsetting thing for me.” Trael was last week named in the Tasman Makos ‘emerging players squad’ which was effectively a trial team. It’s likely they will pick another midfielder for the ITM Cup squad, and it could have been him. But Trael is now sidelined indefinitely. He can’t play rugby, he can’t hit the gym, he
can’t run, and he can’t do anything that will over-exert his body — not until he gets surgery on his heart. “It could kill me. Death,” he simply answers when asked what would happen if he continues to play the sport he loves, the sport he grew up playing, and the sport he hoped would be his job this year. Trael has supraventricular tachycardia, or “SVT” as he knows it as. It means he has abnormally fast heart rhythm, and it races up to 300 beats per minute. He will need
an operation before being free to take the rugby field again. “It just goes fast. I’ve got more electric pulses than I’m meant to. I was told just to keep playing and if I faint it’d be a sign to stop, but I never fainted.” But it’s still a big unknown as to when he will get that operation. Trael has a friend — another rugby player — who had a similar condition and waited three years before eventually going private. He is meeting with his GP this week, and hopes to have a clearer idea by the end of it. If the wait is too long, he’s considering going private too. Trael says missing the club rugby final was the hardest part to take, but making a phone call to Tasman Makos coach Kieran Keane and telling him the news was still pretty hard. “It was difficult. It was real difficult. But he was good about it. He gave me positive feedback. KK mentioned to me if that if I do come back and play good rugby this year before ITM Cup is finished then there’s a possibility, but is it worth trying to rush? I’d rather have a good off-season, train and prove myself for next year.” Out of action from sport, Trael says he will now focus on his building apprenticeship.

Bruce says the team has a “50/50” split of school leavers and secondary school
students, and it’s not just Waimea College contributing with players. There are also five students from Garin College taking part. The home games have been split between Jubilee Park and Waimea College. Waimea Old Boys aren’t the only club to have a formal link with a secondary school. There is a Stoke-Nayland team in the same grade, while Nelson and Marist have sides in the younger grades.

Netballers take on best in the country Nelson competed at the New Zealand Under 17 Tournament held last week on Auckland’s North Shore. Nelson had a great start to the tournament with a first-up win against East Waikato 43-21. The Nelson girls came out firing, with Abbey Franklin leading the charge in the shooting circle. Strong defensive work through court saw a number of tips converted. Makaila Powick was the pivotal link through court while Ariana TekawaWiremu was the hunter outside the circle
edge. Wellington was a skilled team who proved to be too tough in the second game, where they suffocated Nelson’s attack at every opportunity. Poppy Restieaux and Shani McLeod-Bennett toiled tirelessly throughout the 21-43 loss. In their final pool games Nelson lost 2133 to Kapi Mana and 25-29 to Waitakere 2. The loss to Waitakere was a little disappointing as it meant the crossover games were against higher-placed teams. Nelson lost 26-33 to Wanganui, which came down to a couple of crucial turno-
vers. Impressive shooting statistics were returned by Abbey, 21 from 23, while Poppy had the perfect record. The loss put Nelson in the play-off for 25th-32nd. Nelson bounced back with an impressive 4224 win over Pukekohe. All three shooters averaged over 80 per cent, while Shani and Poppy were a formidable defensive duo where they had good body position for rebounds and pulled in a number of welltimed intercepts. Makaila again had a high work rate at centre. The game against Eastern Bay of Plenty
went goal for goal throughout, with neither team able to dominate. A crucial turnover in the final quarter was enough for the northern team to get their noses in front to record a 31-27 win, despite another strong defensive effort by Shani and Poppy. Nelson were competitive against Waitakere 2, until the final quarter when they were defeated 24-40. Nelson were placed 28th out of the 40 teams, the same placing as last year, however there were another seven teams competing this year.
